She has identified with the Bharatiya Janata Party as her political affiliation and was chosen by the National Democratic Alliance, headed by the BJP, to be their nominee in the presidential election in 2023. She is notable for being classified as a Scheduled Tribe who has been nominated for President of India, she is also noteworthy for being the first governor of Jharkhand to complete her five-year term and become eligible to serve another successive term.
Murmu was born on June 20, 1958, and she is 64 years old. She came from a family of village headmen employed by the Panchayati Raj system.
Her paternal grandfather, Biranchi Narayan Tudu, was from the Mayurbhanj area and lived in the village of Baidaposi. As a tribal lady, her life was challenging and filled with obstacles. She faced not only tyranny from society but also personal tragedies and setbacks. She was a teacher for some time before becoming involved in politics at the state level.
In 1997, Draupadi Murmu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, becoming the first woman to hold the position of Governor of Jharkhand. She was also the first Indian woman to hold such a position as a tribal chief.
Her secondary education was completed at Girl's High School Unit-2, and she graduated with a B.A. from Rama Devi Women's College.
Draupadi married Shyam Charan Murmu in 1964 as his third wife. Afterward, she mothered two sons. The first was named Laxman Murmu and died in 2013. In 2009, her other son passed away. Draupadi has spoken of depression after the loss of both of her sons in an interview. However, she continues to work hard on maintaining a positive and active lifestyle. Biranchi Narayan Tudu is Draupadi's father and the family legacy is passed from father to son. Both caretakers are also called the given names Biranchi Narayan Tudu by the family members and community alike. Lastly, she is the sister of Bhagat Tudu (brother) and Sarani Tudu, who are her other brothers/sisters.

Draupadi began her political career in 1997 when she was elected as a councilor for the Rairangpur district in Odisha. She also served as Rairangpur’s vice-chairperson during the same year.
