Jhansi is a historic town in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It lies on the banks of the Pahuj River in the Bundelkhand region, and is the administrative headquarters of Jhansi District and Division. Known as the Gateway to Bundelkhand, Jhansi is located between rivers Pahuj and Betwa at an average elevation of 285 metres (935 feet). It is about 415 kilometres (258 mi) from New Delhi and 99 kilometres (62 mi) south of Gwalior.)
The old city of Jhansi grew around its stone fort, which sits crowning a neighbouring rock. Nowadays it's called Balwant Nagar and its ancient name was Balvant Nagar.

From 1817 to 1854 it was ruled by Maharaja Raghubir Singh as the capital of the principality of Jhansi ruled by Marathas. The state fell into the hands of British Governor General in 1854 because Damodar Rao's claim to the throne was denied and then from June 1857 to June 1858 the Rani Lakshmi Bai ruled it.
Jhansi is well-connected to all the major towns of Uttar Pradesh by both land and rail. A few years ago, construction began on the National Highways Development Project. Due to Jhansi's location on a North-South and East-West corridor, it has attracted infrastructure and real estate development.
In addition, Jhansi was designated among India's top ten cleanest cities in Swachh Survekshan 2018. Recently, plans have been drawn up to build a new airport in this area of Uttar Pradesh.
