Most Recent Housing Scheme
The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) recently launched a major housing redevelopment project under the Banglar Bari initiative at Jhoro Bustee, located off Golf Club Road, Kolkata.
This project aims to provide safe and dignified housing to slum dwellers by transforming informal settlements into permanent structures. Under this scheme, 220 modern flats have been constructed across five five-storey buildings at a total cost of around Rs.13.4 crore. Each flat has a built-up area of 366 sq. ft., providing improved living space, sanitation, and access to essential facilities.
The project also includes the creation of a community centre-cum-kitchen for residents to promote social inclusion and community living. It represents KMDA’s continued commitment to urban renewal and housing for all, ensuring that the urban poor benefit from sustainable and safe accommodation.
About Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA)
The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) was established in 1970 under the West Bengal Town and Country (Planning and Development) Act, 1979. It functions as the statutory planning and development authority for the Kolkata Metropolitan Area (KMA), covering Kolkata and its adjoining urban regions.
KMDA plays a crucial role in urban infrastructure development, housing, transport, drainage, and environmental management, ensuring the planned growth and modernization of the metropolitan region.
Vision
• To promote inclusive, sustainable, and well-planned urban development in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area.
• To ensure adequate, affordable, and modern housing for every section of society.
• To transform slum areas into liveable, safe, and hygienic urban habitats.
Objectives
• To undertake urban redevelopment projects that improve housing, sanitation, and living standards.
• To develop infrastructure facilities including roads, drainage, and community spaces for balanced urban growth.
• To implement government housing missions like Banglar Bari and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) effectively.
• To focus on environmentally sustainable urban planning in the metropolitan region.
Housing Schemes and Initiatives
KMDA has successfully implemented several housing and urban development projects in the past, including:
• Banglar Bari – Rajarhat and Nonadanga Projects: Affordable housing complexes for economically weaker sections and low-income families.
• EWS Housing under JNNURM: Construction of residential units for urban poor across multiple wards in Kolkata.
• Urban Infrastructure Development in Howrah and Salt Lake: Including drainage, water supply, and urban renewal components.
These initiatives collectively aim to enhance the quality of life of metropolitan residents through affordable, sustainable, and inclusive development.
Conclusion
The Banglar Bari Housing Redevelopment Project at Jhoro Bustee marks another milestone in KMDA’s ongoing effort to provide modern, affordable housing for all. By replacing informal settlements with well-structured flats and social facilities, KMDA is transforming Kolkata’s urban landscape into one that is inclusive, resilient, and people centric. Its continuous work underlines a strong vision for “Housing with Dignity” across the city.
