Recent Development Activities
In recent years, the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA) has been actively implementing housing and urban infrastructure programs to improve living standards across urban centers of the state.
The authority is currently involved in the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U), which provides affordable housing for economically weaker and low-income groups in urban areas. Additionally, the Chief Minister Housing Assistance Programme (CMHAP) extends support for housing construction and upgradation to eligible families across Meghalaya.
Apart from these, MUDA has also introduced online building permission systems and simplified approval processes for low-risk residential constructions, promoting transparency and ease of doing business in the housing sector.
About Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA)
The Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA) was established in 1973 under the Meghalaya Town and Country Planning Act to regulate and promote planned urban development in the state. MUDA primarily focuses on urban planning, housing regulation, infrastructure creation, and the implementation of housing welfare schemes in Shillong and other notified towns.
Vision and Objectives
• To promote systematic urban growth and ensure affordable housing for all sections of society.
• To regulate land use, building construction, and urban planning across notified towns.
• To implement state and central housing schemes efficiently and transparently.
• To enhance infrastructure, sanitation, and civic amenities in growing urban areas.
• To support sustainable and eco-friendly urban development across Meghalaya.
Past Development Initiatives
MUDA has played a crucial role in shaping urban Meghalaya through various initiatives:
• Implementation of PMAY-Urban housing projects in Shillong and other towns.
• Launch of the Chief Minister Housing Assistance Programme (CMHAP) to support EWS and LIG households.
• Development of urban infrastructure projects including roads, drainage, and public facilities.
• Introduction of an online building approval system for greater efficiency and transparency.
Conclusion
The Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA) continues to lead the state’s urban transformation through its focus on affordable housing, modern infrastructure, and efficient urban governance. While no new standalone housing scheme has been introduced recently, MUDA’s active implementation of PMAY-U and CMHAP ensures that urban residents have improved access to safe and affordable housing options.
