Urban Development and Housing Department (Sikkim)

The Urban Development and Housing Department (Sikkim) is located in a building opposite STNM Hospital in Gangtok. The building is unique because it has a clock tower and a traditional entrance gate. The UD&HD (Sikkim) department manages various functions, including the administration of urban areas that became the 22nd state of India after Sikkim merged with the country.

This area was managed by the Bazaar Department before Sikkim was annexed, and after this point, Gangtok Municipal Corporation Act was enacted. This law was repealed by Tikams (Repeal and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1984, and its power and functions were reverted to Local Self Government. On July 28th 1990, Local Self Government was renamed as Urban Development and Housing Department following Notification No 7 (17)/ Home dated 28th July1990.
