Recent Housing Scheme: Kalaignarin Kanavu Illam (Hut-Free Tamil Nadu by 2030)
The Tamil Nadu government has recently launched the Kalaignarin Kanavu Illam Scheme, an ambitious initiative aimed at transforming the state into a hut-free Tamil Nadu by 2030. Under this scheme, approximately 8 lakh huts across rural areas will be replaced with permanent concrete houses.
The first phase targets the construction of 1 lakh houses, each costing around Rs. 3.5 lakh. The scheme prioritizes families currently residing in huts, with special provisions for landless households who will be allotted housing plots. Alongside home construction, the scheme ensures access to basic amenities such as roads, streetlights, and water supply facilities.
As of mid-2025, more than 72,000 houses have already been completed, marking significant progress toward the goal of providing safe and durable homes for rural residents.
