Rituals & Traditions
Bhai Dooj is celebrated by both married and unmarried women, with the most important ritual being the application of a tilak (vermilion dot) on the brother’s forehead by the sister, followed by an aarti. The puja thali, prepared for the occasion, typically includes coconut, batashas (sweetened sugar puffs), mithai (sweets), fruits, seven paans, roli, and rice. During the ceremony, the sister lights the puja lamp, performs a small puja, applies tilak on her brother’s forehead, and offers him sweets, fruits, coconut, and other ceremonial items. In return, the brother shows his love and appreciation by giving gifts to his sister, strengthening the bond between them and celebrating their cherished relationship.
Holi Bhai Dooj
Holi Bhai Dooj is a lesser-known festival devoted to the bond between brothers and sisters. In 2025, the Holi Bhai Dooj date will remain consistent with the lunar calendar, observed during the Dwitiya Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the Chaitra month for Purnimant, or Dwitiya Tithi of Phalguna for Amavasyant.
Bhai Dooj Katha
One of the most popular legends associates Bhai Dooj with Lord Yama (God of Death) and his sister, Yamuna.
• Surya Dev (Sun God) had two children: Yama and Yamuna
• Yamuna and Yama were raised together after their mother Saranya left
• Whenever Yamuna visited Yama, he would make excuses, but one day he decided to surprise her
• Yamuna welcomed him with tilak, Akshat, and a feast, taking care of him lovingly
• Before she left, Yamuna asked Yama to dedicate this day to siblings, which he did
• Since then, brothers visit their sisters on Bhai Dooj, receive tilak and blessings, and celebrate their bond
